Harris County Criminal Courts: Frequently Asked Questions

Be on time:

• Check with your attorney for your court date & time.

You MUST be present for Docket Call.

• Come early and be prepared to wait in line! Once at the CJC, you will need to go through metal detectors. Be aware that the lines can be VERY long. For example, you may have to wait in line to:
(1) enter the building,
(2) go through the metal detector,
(3) get onto an elevator.
Plan accordingly!

Dress Code:

• Behavior & Attire should reflect Dignity & Respect toward the Court and its staff.

• Dress Code: Business. Always err on the side of caution, always tuck your shirt.

NOT ALLOWED:

° NO SHORTS, TANK TOPS or FLIP FLOPS.
° No suggestive clothing: i.e.; low rise jeans, pants or immodestly short skirts.
° No slogans on clothing related to drugs, alcohol, illegal activities, etc.
° Cell phones and pagers must be on silent mode or turned off.
° Headphones are not allowed.
° Food and drink are not allowed in the Courtroom.

Using the Elevators:

The Criminal Justice Center has two sections of public elevators:
The High Rise section serves the 1st, 11th- 20th floors (On the Right if you stand with your back facing Franklin st.);
The Low Rise section serves the basement through 10th floor (On the Left if you stand with your back facing Franklin st.)
10th floor Crossover: If you are on any floor below 10 and want to go to any floor above 10, you will need to either (1) go to the 10th floor, exit, and walk across to the High Rise elevators, or (2) go back to the 1st floor, exit, and walk across to the High Rise elevators.

Food & Drink:

REMEMBER: Food and drink are not allowed in the Courtroom.

• Cafeteria & vending machines: 2nd floor.
• Water fountains & bathrooms on each floor.
• Shoe shine: 2nd floor, if available.
